Transforming Risk Assessment: The Power of Open Standards in Data Collaboration

Open data standards, risk information During the session we presented the latest capabilities of the Risk Data Library, an open data standard and toolkit to manage online collections of risk data. At the heart of that effort is the Risk Data Library Standard (RDLS). The session demonstrated the role of open standards more broadly, and the importance of standards in risk information, before highlighting how early adopters are using the RDLS in their work. This includes the Oasis Loss Modelling Framework, Tomorrow’s Cities urban disaster research hub, the European Commission Risk Data Hub, Arup and JBA Risk Management. Pradeep Mandapaka from JBA Risk Management discussed how JBA flood modellers had trialled the RDLS and provided positive feedback including the value of an understandable workflow, useful templates and wealth of supporting documentation provided in the RDL project to aid adoption of the RDLS. Daniela Zuloaga from Arup described common pain points in using risk information in the engineering sector, and demonstrated how the digital standard would assist their work, describing their successful application of the toolkit especially the data validation and convertor tool.

The audience gained insight into how GFDRR is trying to improve access to risk information in the risk community and were able to view the new RDL data portal and hear from peers who have been using the RDLS already. Feedback was positive, and we are confident the session will contribute to increased adoption of the RDLS over the next months as we continue to increase the number and range of datasets described using this open standard.
