John is a Technical Director and Head of International Development at JBA Consulting. He manages and directs projects relating to disaster risk management applications globally. Over the last 16 years, he has provided technical input to over 40 projects covering more than 50 low/middle income countries for the World Bank, governments, humanitarians, NGOs, research institutions and (re)insurance firms, developing risk models and geospatial software tools for disaster risk management.
John leads on JBA’s strategic flood early warning system, Flood Foresight, and has been involved in developing flood forecasting systems in more than 13 countries, supporting humanitarian anticipatory action, parametric insurance, sovereign risk financing, and asset management.
John’s primary technical specialism is GIS and remote sensing (PhD), particularly analysis of high-resolution satellite data for urban monitoring (exposure data development for risk modelling, post-disaster damage assessment, recovery monitoring and land use/cover analysis). He has been involved in numerous post-disaster damage and loss assessment initiatives, rapid loss assessments and reconnaissance missions and remote sensing-based damage assessments.
John is a Chartered Geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
