Kozo Nagami

Kozo NAGAMI, Specially Appointed Professor, Green Goals Initiative, Tohoku University. He is also affiliated with International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) and Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University. Kozo NAGAMI has joined Tohoku University recently in November, 2022 after more than 28 year experience working in Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In JICA, he had engaged in three big disaster recovery assistance operations: Indonesia tsunami and Aceh recovery in 2004, the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and Nepal earthquake in 2015. From 2019, he had been Deputy Director General, and Group Director for Disaster Risk Reduction Group Global Environment Department of JICA. Mr. NAGAMI holds a Ph.D. in International Regional Development Studies from Toyo University, Master’s in Public Policy from University of Southern California, and Engineering Bachelor from Kyoto University. Targeting developing countries, middle-income countries in particular with disaster risk reduction (DRR) needs, He is working to develop approaches and provide decision-making support to effectively promote sustainable urban development and pre-disaster DRR investments, that not only reduces the current disaster risk caused by past economic-first development but also minimizes future disaster risk.
