Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra is the Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department and 3rd Vice President of WMO. With more than 30 years of experience in meteorology, he has made significant contributions in improvement of early warning services of IMD, especially with respect to cyclones and impact based forecasting.
His important scientific contributions included (i) End to End Cyclone Warning System, (ii) introduction of new tools, technology, methods and models in monitoring and forecasting of severe weather events, (iii) introduction of severe weather hazard analysis, Impact based forecasting and GIS applications, (iv) indigenous development of Decision Support System (DSS) by IMD for severe weather forecasting, (v) Multi-hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), (vii) implementation of Common Alert Protocol for warning dissemination.
His international contribution includes implementation of tropical cyclone advisory services to 13 WMO/ESCAP Panel countries, severe weather guidance to South Asia and Bay of Bengal countries, Flash Flood guidance for South Asia.
He is the author of more than 140 research papers in peer reviewed national/international journals. He edited 18 books and 8 Journals and recipient of various awards and recognitions from different agencies.
