Futu’risk’tic√: Using Future Climate Projections to Inform Action NOW
Future climate projections show us a possible future. Do early actions, which help people now, also help them prepare for the future impacts of climate change? The session starts with a weather bulletin set in the 2050s of what the impacts of climate change might be globally. Met Office will then provide further context on Country X. The challenges the people of this nation face NOW are compounded by more frequent and intense Tropical Cyclones which lead to flooding. Seasonal forecasts indicate the possibility of more frequent droughts in addition to more intense rainfall events. And climate projections to the 2050s/2080s indicate this country is likely to experience the potential desertification of a specific region and flash flooding further compounding and exacerbating pre-existing risks. The information on Country X will set the scene for an interactive discussion with panellists from the WFP, CREWS, UNESCAP and the World Bank Disaster Risk Finance team as well as seeking input from audiences on how we can incorporate future climate projections and potential climate risks into our early warnings, planning and actions today thereby increasing our collective resilience to the impacts of climate change.
