Human Mobility in Disasters: New Applications of Data from Mobile Devices and Social Media in Recent Asian Emergencies

Mobility Data, Disasters, Data Science, Predictive Analytics The focus of this session was on recent advances in the data, methodology, and translational dynamics involved in the analysis of human mobility for preparedness and response to disasters.

Key outcomes included: 1) Synthetic data holds promise for filling in data gaps and building taxonomies of urban mobility, but still needs to confront issues of bias. 2) Translation of mobility data into insights for decision-making requires building long-term data collaboratives which include communities and government along with data providers and response agencies. 3) Companies like Meta are playing crucial roles not only in data generation out of large digital platforms, but also in pioneering privacy protecting methodologies like differential privacy which allow for private data to be safely shared publicly. 4) Sustainability of mobility data pipelines requires strong participation with public sector partners and integration into planning workflows.
