Improved Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Assessments for Areas Prone to Climate Change Adversity
Use cases and potential solutions in Ghana, Bangladesh and Vietnam coastal areas Coastal problems due to flooding and coastal erosion were explored within in Ghana, Bangladesh and Vietnam and possible satellite derived Earth observation products and services to provide coastal montiroing and improve coastal flood models were proposed by ARGANS, followed by examples of work being conducted in Bangladesh and Vietnam. The ARGANS work was based on demonstration prpejcts conducted under the ESA Gobal Development Assistance programme work. The session conlcuded with a panel discussion which also introducted the Pacific Disaster Center to add real world operational input. Questions ranged from data & knowledge needs, how can a regional approach be adopted, to how can EO based services be funded.
“There are no silver bullets, but evidenced based solutions are much more likely to succeed, especially if collaboration between local and regional stakeholders in encouraged as well.”
Closer collaboration between coastal states, a shared understanding of satellite EO based support, that capacity building is a major requirment from host nations and that coastal management and /or development requires histroical data and the ability bto model before nature based soltuions or construction solutions are adopted.
